Project Pegasus, Victoria Embankment

Structural Steelwork

The Treasury Building, located near Victoria Embankment in central London, is one of the most iconic and historically significant buildings in the city. Originally constructed in the 1950s, this historic building serves as the headquarters of Her Majesty’s Treasury. As part of a broader initiative to preserve and modernize this historic building, a comprehensive renovation project was undertaken to enhance its structural integrity while maintaining its architectural grandeur.

Scope of Work:

Project Pegasus will renew, extend and refit the facilities of the 1950s Treasury Building, Library and Hall to provide modern purpose-built educational facilities, including a lecture theatre and training rooms. It will also give the opportunity for extensive modernisation and upgrading to its Hall and Treasury building for the first time since the reconstruction after damage sustained during the Second World War.

Deep Steelworks & Architectural were contracted to carry out critical structural improvements as part of the Treasury Building’s extensive refurbishment. This included the supply of over 250t of structural steelwork

Our work focused on three primary areas

Steelworks Strengthening to Internal Columns:

The building’s internal columns required significant reinforcement to support the additional loads introduced by the refurbishment. We carried out detailed steelworks strengthening, utilizing advanced techniques to enhance the structural capacity of these columns without compromising the building’s historical integrity.

Scaffold Steel Frame for Entire Roof and Mezzanine Floors:

To facilitate safe access and comprehensive work on the roof and mezzanine floors, we designed and installed a robust scaffold steel frame system. This frame provided a secure platform for ongoing construction activities and allowed for efficient movement of materials and personnel across different levels of the building.

Installation of Splice Joints:

Due to the complex nature of the renovation, numerous splice joints were required to connect steel sections, particularly in areas where structural continuity was essential. Our team expertly installed these joints, ensuring precision and durability while adhering to stringent safety and quality standards.

Challenges:

Working within a historic, operational government building presented unique challenges. Maintaining the building’s original architectural elements while integrating modern structural enhancements required meticulous planning and execution. Additionally, coordinating work in a high-security environment demanded strict adherence to protocols and minimized disruption to ongoing government operations.

Outcome:

The successful completion of the Treasury Building’s structural enhancements has significantly bolstered the building’s integrity, ensuring its continued use and preservation for future generations. Our work has contributed to the safe and functional modernization of one of London’s most important government buildings, blending historic preservation with contemporary engineering solutions.

This project showcases our expertise in handling complex, high-profile renovations and our commitment to delivering excellence in every aspect of our work.
